Two legal systems, one ceremony
A consular marriage must satisfy the consulate’s rules and usually also be recognised where the couple lives. The consulate may require notices, witnesses and documents that differ from the local civil process.
Confirm recognition in both countries before booking. A ceremony that is valid in one system may need registration or a separate step in the other.
Frequently asked questions
Is a consular marriage recognised locally?
Not automatically. The destination’s rules decide, and some states require a local registration as well.
Can non-citizens marry at a consulate?
Usually at least one party must be a citizen of the sending state. The consulate sets the conditions.
